Hermes (1931-2005) was born in De Pere, Wisconsin. He joined the Army in 1949 and served in Japan with the Occupation Force and in Korea during the beginning of the Korean War (1950-1951), where he was wounded in combat. After the war, Hermes served as a quartermaster in France until he was discharged in 1954.
